Where are the best job opportunities in BC?

In BC, the demand for skilled workers is expected to heat up dramatically over the next decade, with the province forecasting over one million job openings until 2020. Most (two-thirds) of the openings will be due to retiring workers, with the remainder prompted by projected economic growth.

Sales and service, business, finance and administrative, and trades, transport and equipment operators among the fields where most of the job openings are expected, according to the most recent Labour Market Outlook.

The strongest growth in demand is anticipated in the health occupations, natural and applied sciences and jobs in art, culture, recreation and sports.

Another report released by the Construction Sector Council earlier this year predicts new mining, pipeline and port expansion projects will result in double-digit employment growth in the province’s construction industry over the next four years.

Boilermakers, carpenters, construction estimators, construction managers, millwrights, electricians, plumbers, steamfitters and pipefitters are all expected to be in hot demand.

Adam Thorvaldson, executive director of the trades advocacy organization, Skills Canada, said attracting young people into the skilled trades now is critical to the province’s success.

“You are always going to need [skilled tradespeople] in your daily life. They are the ones who are responsible for all the things around us that we often take for granted,” he said.

“The people who do [these jobs] are very, very skilled at what they do. They can create and fix things, and have a level of experience, much beyond the level the average person could have unless they were to go on and study [the job] themselves,” he said.
